Hamilton edges out Darcie Brown for a place in a pace-heavy Australian attack, having impressed since breaking into the side. She debuted in Tests and ODIs against India earlier in March and went on to make her T20I debut against the West Indies, quickly establishing herself as a versatile bowling option.
She is among seven pace-bowling choices in the squad, joining Megan Schutt and Kim Garth, along with all-round options Annabel Sutherland, Tahlia McGrath, Ellyse Perry and Nicola Carey. Carey returns to a T20 World Cup squad for the first time since 2020, while Perry is set for a remarkable 10th appearance at the tournament, having featured in every edition since 2009.
National selector Shawn Flegler explained the decision, noting that conditions played a key role in the final selection.
“Darcie Brown was unlucky to miss out, but the decision was based on the conditions we’re expecting and the balance of the squad. With at least six right-arm pace options and raw pace expected to be less effective, we opted for Lucy Hamilton, who offers something different as a left-arm quick,” Flegler said.
This tournament also marks a major milestone for new captain Sophie Molineux, who takes charge following Alyssa Healy’s retirement in March. She is one of four spin options in the squad alongside Ashleigh Gardner, Georgia Wareham and Alana King, who impressed recently in the series against the West Indies.
Flegler praised Molineux’s early leadership impact.
“Sophie has already made her mark as captain and built a strong connection with the group over the last couple of tours. We’re excited to see what this side can achieve under her leadership,” he added.
Wicketkeeper Beth Mooney is the only designated keeper in the 15-member squad, with Tahlia Wilson named as the travelling reserve.
Australia have been drawn in Group A alongside Bangladesh, India, Netherlands, Pakistan and South Africa. They begin their campaign on June 13 with a high-profile clash against South Africa.
