The West Indies’ run chase got off to a good start as Alick Athanaze hit two boundaries off Aaron Hardie, but he was out the next ball for 11. Justin Greaves (eight) also fell in the following over, with Hazlewood causing the damage. At 34-3, the West Indies were in trouble.
Although Hope and Carty managed a 53-run partnership, it took them 14 overs. Hazlewood returned to dismiss Hope for 29, and Abbott got rid of Carty (40), leaving the West Indies at 108-5. Hazlewood took another wicket by removing Forde lbw, and the night ended with a spectacular one-handed catch by Cameron Green to dismiss Roston Chase.
Earlier, Abbott scored 69 off 63 balls to help Australia recover from a shaky start at 167-7. Debutant Jake Fraser-McGurk couldn’t make an impact, getting out for 10 to Alzarri Joseph. Joseph took another wicket, removing Inglis for nine. Forde then dismissed Smith, who chopped on, leaving Australia at 50-3. Labuschagne (26) fell to Motie, who also took the wickets of Hardie (26) and Short (41). Abbott and debutant Sutherland added 57 runs, and a late surge helped Abbott reach his second one-day half-century.
