As the excitement builds for the fourth Test between India and England commencing on Friday, February 23, all eyes are on star off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who stands on the brink of breaking a significant record set by legendary cricketer Anil Kumble. Ashwin, who recently became only the second Indian bowler after Kumble to reach 500 Test wickets, is now just three wickets away from surpassing Kumble’s tally as India’s leading wicket-taker in Tests on home soil.

Having achieved the remarkable feat during the third Test against England in Rajkot, Ashwin’s impending milestone has captured the attention of cricket enthusiasts worldwide. With 348 wickets to his name in home Tests, Ashwin is on the verge of overtaking Kumble’s record of 350 scalps. Kumble, a stalwart of Indian cricket, retired with an illustrious tally of 619 Test wickets.

Reflecting on Ashwin’s exceptional achievement, former South African captain AB de Villiers hailed the off-spinner as a legend and emphasized his vital role in the Indian cricket team.

“What a fantastic achievement! Congratulations Ash, you are one of the toughest bowlers I have ever played against – an incredible asset for the Indian cricket team with both bat and ball,” remarked De Villiers, acknowledging Ashwin’s immense contribution to the sport.

However, De Villiers also offered insights into how England’s batters could counter Ashwin’s prowess, suggesting a proactive approach and utilizing footwork to unsettle the bowler.

As Ashwin prepares to script another chapter in his illustrious career, his dedication to the sport was evident when he rushed to Chennai after Day 2 of the third Test due to a family emergency. Despite the challenging circumstances, Ashwin rejoined the team on Day 4, courtesy of a round-trip chartered flight arranged by the BCCI, exemplifying his commitment to the game.

With India leading the series 2-1 following a resounding 434-run victory in the third Test in Rajkot, anticipation mounts for the upcoming clash as Ashwin aims to etch his name further in the annals of cricketing history.
