Ashwin, an off-spinner, started the Test with 499 wickets. He dismissed opener Zak Crawley for 15 in Rajkot, reaching the milestone of 500 wickets. He’s the second Indian to achieve this feat after Anil Kumble (619).
Ashwin bowled a full-length delivery at leg-stump, causing Crawley to top-edge to Rajat Patidar at fine leg. The Indian teammates congratulated Ashwin, who acknowledged the applauding crowd.
Joining an exclusive club, Ashwin is now alongside spinners Muttiah Muralitharan (Sri Lanka – 800), the late Shane Warne (Australia – 708), Kumble, and Nathan Lyon (Australia – 517).
At 37, Ashwin has played 98 Tests since his 2011 debut, scoring 3,308 runs with five Test centuries as a batsman.
