His appointment comes just a day after the removal of Faruque Ahmed by the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
Faruque, who was appointed as a sports ministry representative on the board in August 2024 and became president the same day, was ousted after eight BCB directors filed a no-confidence motion against him. The ministry cited this motion and a report from a fact-finding committee investigating corruption in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) as the basis for its decision.
Aminul entered the BCB as a new representative of the ministry, following the same pathway Faruque had taken months earlier. Once installed as a director, he was unanimously elected by the board to take over as president. He will serve in this role until the next BCB elections, expected to be held by October. For now, he has taken leave from his job as an ICC development manager in Melbourne.
Aminul inherits a board facing internal unrest and a string of recent controversies. Faruque’s tenure, which lasted just over nine months, was marred by poor management and fractured relationships. His decision to publicly question and later sack head coach Chandika Hathurusingha stirred early tensions, with directors accusing him of ignoring constitutional protocols requiring board consultation.

The tipping point reportedly came during BPL 2025, when the Durbar Rajshahi franchise failed to pay players and hotel bills. This prompted government intervention and led to a player revolt, severely tarnishing the tournament’s image. Faruque’s strained relationships with key board members, including Nazmul Abedeen Fahim and a senior aide to the sports adviser, further isolated him.
Faruque’s focus on contesting the upcoming elections, which he publicly announced last month, reportedly added to the discontent among directors, who felt he was prioritizing politics over board unity. His presidency officially lasted nine months and eight days.
Aminul now faces the challenge of stabilizing the board and restoring credibility amid ongoing concerns, including club-level dissatisfaction and scrutiny over recent Dhaka Premier League matches.
