Alyssa Healy will miss the Sydney Sixers’ WBBL 11 season opener against the Perth Scorchers after sustaining a thumb injury during the recent ODI World Cup semi-final in India.

Healy injured her right thumb when a sharp chance off Jemimah Rodrigues deflected off the batter’s top edge and struck the end of her thumb. Despite the pain, she continued playing, though Rodrigues went on to score an unbeaten 127, helping India chase down Australia’s 338-run total with nine balls to spare.

The Sixers confirmed on Thursday that Healy’s injury is “minor,” but the team has decided not to risk her for Sunday’s clash in Perth. Medical staff are optimistic she could return early in the WBBL season if she is able to bat and keep wicket while wearing a protective splint.

This setback comes shortly after Healy recovered from a calf strain that had kept her out of Australia’s final two World Cup group-stage matches. The Sixers squad for the match against the Scorchers will be announced on Saturday, with the season opener set for Sunday, November 9, at the WACA.

Looking at her WBBL record, Healy has played 120 matches for the Sixers, scoring 3,006 runs at an average of 26.83 and a strike rate of 134.37. Last season, however, she appeared in just four matches, scoring 20 runs at an average of 5.00 with a strike rate of 90.90.
