AB de Villiers Reflects on India’s Dressing Room Turmoil: ‘When There’s Smoke, There’s Fire’
Cricket legend AB de Villiers has shared his thoughts on the reported tensions in India’s dressing room, which came to light in a The Indian Express article. The piece suggested a senior team member was positioning himself as a “Mr. Fix It,” while captain Rohit Sharma faced scrutiny over his form.
Speaking during a live session on his X (formerly Twitter) handle after India’s 1-3 Border-Gavaskar Trophy defeat to Australia, De Villiers emphasized the critical role of a healthy team environment.
On Dressing Room Leaks and Speculation
Addressing the dressing room rumors, De Villiers said:
“I’ve heard the rumors, and while I don’t have all the facts, I’ll say this—when there’s smoke, there’s fire. I’ve been part of dressing rooms where things were tense, especially on tours away from home. It’s tough being away from family and not performing at your best.
“The dressing room environment is everything, especially when you’re under pressure. If that unity breaks, it becomes impossible to compete at the highest level. From what I’ve seen, the Indian dressing room may have lost that cohesion during the Australia tour.”

Lessons from Personal Experience
Drawing from his own career, De Villiers shared insights into how dressing room dynamics can impact a team:
“It’s easy for negativity and bad habits to creep in. I remember how tough it was during our 2006 series against Australia. We lost five out of six Tests across home and away series, and the dressing room wasn’t a happy place. We were arguing and pointing fingers—it was a low point for us.”
For De Villiers, a positive atmosphere in the dressing room was non-negotiable, especially during his time as captain. “I always prioritized a truthful and loyal environment where everyone respected each other. That spirit kept us going, even during the toughest losses.”
A Moment of Brotherhood
De Villiers recalled one of his most painful moments—the 2015 ODI World Cup semi-final loss to New Zealand at Eden Park:
“When we knew we wouldn’t make the final, the dressing room was still incredibly united. I’ve never felt such a strong bond; it was like being surrounded by brothers. Those are the moments that build character and help teams rise again.”
Final Thoughts
While De Villiers refrained from drawing conclusions about the Indian team, he reiterated the importance of addressing any underlying issues. “A tight dressing room can make or break a team, and I hope the Indian squad finds that balance again soon,” he said.
