In a strategic move ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has appointed former Pakistani pace ace Aaqib Javed as the national team’s fast bowling coach. The confirmation of Javed’s appointment on Saturday, March 16, signals a proactive step by SLC to bolster their bowling department for the upcoming global cricketing extravaganza.
Aaqib Javed: A Cricketing Luminary
With an illustrious cricketing career boasting 163 ODIs and 22 Test matches for Pakistan, Aaqib Javed brings a wealth of experience to his new coaching role. Notably, Javed was a pivotal member of Pakistan’s 1992 World Cup-winning squad, showcasing his prowess on cricket’s grandest stage.
Elevating Sri Lanka’s Bowling Prowess
Ashley De Silva, CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket, expressed confidence in Javed’s ability to shape Sri Lanka’s bowlers for success in the T20 World Cup. Highlighting Javed’s extensive international experience, both as a player and a coach, De Silva anticipates a positive impact on Sri Lanka’s bowling unit.
We warmly welcome Aaqib and believe that his immense international experience, both in playing and coaching, will help our bowlers come into good shape ahead of the upcoming major international competitions, such as the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup,
said De Silva.
Beyond his playing days, Javed’s coaching journey spans various national teams, including stints as Pakistan’s bowling coach and as the head coach of the UAE and Afghanistan national teams. His track record of success, including coaching Pakistan’s U19 team to victory in the 2004 U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup and guiding Pakistan to T20 World Cup glory in 2009, underscores his pedigree as a coach. Javed’s tenure with the UAE National Team was equally impactful, culminating in their qualification for prestigious ICC events, including the Cricket World Cup and T20 World Cup qualifiers.
