At 43, James Anderson continues to defy the odds, claiming his 56th five-wicket haul in First-Class cricket during Lancashire’s clash against Northamptonshire in the Rothesay County Championship on Saturday, April 4.
Anderson, making his first professional appearance in six months, produced figures of 5 for 64 in the first innings, restricting Northamptonshire to 215 for 9. The highlight of his spell was the dismissal of opener Ricardo Vasconcelos, with Anderson bowling around the wicket to pitch it up, seam back, and rattle the stumps between bat and pad.
Despite retiring from international cricket in 2024, Anderson remains a cornerstone of Lancashire’s bowling attack. Ahead of the 2026 season, he was named captain of the Red Rose County’s red-ball side, a team he debuted for in 2001. His career tally now stands at 1,148 First-Class wickets from 305 matches, underlining his longevity and continued effectiveness.
Last season, Anderson took 17 wickets in six County Championship games at an average of 25.94, maintaining an economy rate of under three runs per over. His experience and skill remain a major asset as Lancashire aim to return to Division One of the County Championship.
Anderson’s international career was equally remarkable. He played his final Test at Lord’s against the West Indies, ending with 704 wickets in 188 Tests, making him the fast bowler with the most Test wickets in cricket history.
Even in his 40s, Anderson continues to be a potent force with the ball, proving that age is just a number for the legendary seamer.
