Background of the Case
The dispute centers around a residential plot adjacent to Pathan’s bungalow in Tandalja, Vadodara. In 2012, Pathan requested that the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) sell him the land, citing security concerns for himself and his family. He argued that his status as an international cricketer warranted additional protection.
The VMC rejected his request in 2014, stating the plot could not be sold. Despite the rejection, Pathan continued to occupy the property. The matter remained dormant until 2024, shortly after he was elected as an MP from Baharampur, West Bengal.
Court Verdict
Following a notice from the VMC to vacate the land, Pathan challenged it in court. However, his petition was dismissed by Justice Mauna Bhatt, who emphasized that celebrity status does not place anyone above the law. The court directed civic authorities to remove the encroachment, noting that Pathan’s influence as a public figure made compliance with the law even more crucial.
Yusuf Pathan’s Political Career
After retiring from cricket in February 2021, Pathan entered politics in 2024 by joining the Trinamool Congress. He contested the Baharampur Lok Sabha seat, defeating long-time Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury by a margin of 85,022 votes. Pathan cited his admiration for Mamata Banerjee’s development work and his experience in Bengal through the IPL as reasons for joining politics, aiming to serve the public and give back to the community.
