₹151 Crore Purses & RTM Twists: Why the IPL 2026 Auction Is Set to Be Unpredictable
The excitement around the IPL 2026 mini auction is building rapidly, with fans and analysts speculating about potential player trades, releases, and retentions. Before the auction begins, the trade window will offer the 10 franchises a crucial chance to rethink past decisions, reshape their squads, and plan their strategies for the upcoming season.

Unlike the mega auction, the mini auction features a smaller player pool and a tighter budget, giving teams the opportunity to fine-tune their core, find replacements, or add strategic backups.

With the pre-auction trade window and the IPL 2026 mini auction approaching, here’s a detailed look at the rule changes, expected dates and venues, possible trade candidates, and everything else you need to stay updated.

IPL Auction 2026: Date & Venue

The IPL 2025 mega auction was held on November 24–25, 2024, in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where franchises drafted squads for the next three seasons.

The IPL 2026 mini auction is scheduled for December 16 in Abu Dhabi, after Mumbai and Delhi were initially considered as potential hosts.

As reported by OneCricket, teams must submit their retention and release lists by November 15, marking the start of the auction process. After this deadline, the BCCI will finalize the registered player list and confirm the auction pool.

Mega Auction vs Mini Auction: Key Differences

Right to Match (RTM) Card

  • Mega Auction: Teams can use RTM to buy back released players by matching the highest bid.
    • 6 retentions → No RTM
    • 5 retentions → 1 RTM
    • 4 retentions → 2 RTMs
  • Mini Auction: RTM cannot be used.

Retention Rules

  • Mega Auction: Limited retentions. For IPL 2025, teams could retain up to 6 players (5 capped + 1 uncapped).
  • Mini Auction: No fixed retention limit; teams may retain as many players as they can afford within their purse and squad structure.

Player Pool & Auction Purse

  • Mega Auction: Larger pool with most major players available; purse was ₹120 crore per team for 2025.
  • Mini Auction: Purse depends on what remains after retentions and previous spending.

What’s New in IPL 2026? Updated Auction Rules

Right to Match (RTM) – Updated Mechanism

Teams can still buy back released players by matching the highest bid. However, in a new twist for 2026, the highest bidder will get one final opportunity to increase their bid before the RTM is exercised.

Increased Salary Cap

The auction purse has been raised to ₹151 crore per franchise, up from ₹120 crore last season—one of the biggest purse jumps in IPL history.

Revamped Player Compensation Structure

Player salaries will now consist of two components:

  1. Auction Purse Salary
  2. Incremental Performance Pay
    • A new match fee of ₹7.5 lakh per player per game has been introduced, marking the first time a separate match fee exists alongside the auction salary.
